Common Questions

Colombia visa FAQ

How long can I stay in Colombia as a tourist?

Most nationalities receive 90 days on arrival, extendable to a maximum of 180 days per calendar year. Days are counted across all entries in the year — a common trap for people doing border runs. If you want more than 180 days, you need a visa.

Do I have to apply from outside Colombia?

No. Visa applications are filed online through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Cancillería), and in many cases you can apply while legally inside Colombia. Your specific situation and current immigration status determine the smartest filing strategy — that's exactly the kind of question worth asking a lawyer before you file, not after.

How much income do I need for the digital nomad or pension visa?

Income minimums are defined as multiples of Colombia's legal minimum monthly wage, which adjusts every January — so the peso and dollar figures change annually. Rather than publish numbers that go stale, we confirm the current thresholds for your category when you reach out.

What's the difference between V, M, and R visas?

Visitor (V) visas cover temporary stays — tourism-plus purposes like digital nomads and students in short programs. Migrant (M) visas are for people establishing a life in Colombia: marriage, retirement, investment, work. Resident (R) is permanent residency, earned through accumulated time on M visas or direct qualifying investment.

Do I really need a lawyer, or can I apply myself?

Plenty of people self-file successfully — the portal is public. But denials and inadmisible rulings cost you the filing fee, months of time, and can complicate future applications. A lawyer earns their fee on document preparation, translation and apostille requirements, and knowing what the Cancillería actually wants to see for your category.

What is a cédula de extranjería and do I need one?

It's your Colombian foreigner ID card, required after your visa is approved for any visa valid longer than three months. You'll need it to open bank accounts, sign leases, get local health coverage, and generally function day-to-day. Registration happens at Migración Colombia after you arrive.
